Vitamin D
What It Is
Technically not a vitamin at all, vitamin D in its metabolic product, calcitriol is really a secosteroid hormone that targets over 1000 genes in the human body. It’s needed for calcium and phosphorus metabolism. Vitamin D is also necessary to maintain proper blood levels of insulin. Vitamin D receptors have been found in the pancreas where insulin is produced. This means D supplements can help increase insulin levels in people suffering from diabetes.
What It Does
Current research has found that vitamin D deficiency is a major factor in the pathology of at least 17 varieties of cancer as well as heart disease, stroke, hypertension, autoimmune diseases, diabetes, depression, chronic pain and more.
Research published in the journal of Epidemiology September 2008, shows that people with lower levels of vitamin D in their blood may be at greater risk for developing type 2 diabetes.
Dr. Paul Knekt of the National Public Health Institute in Helsinki, Finland and his colleagues found that men with the highest serum vitamin D levels were the least likely to have developed type 2 diabetes 22 years later.
While most research has focused on a single point in time this study, which follows people over many years is a better way to investigate vitamin D’s causal relationships.Vitamin D is just one of 22 ingredients in the Vita-Betic™ blend multi-vitamin, mineral and herb supplement, formulated to meet the dietary needs of diabetics.
