Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine)
What It Is
Vitamin B6, sometimes called pyridoxine, is one of eight water-soluble B vitamins. It plays a role in maintaining normal hormone balance. When B6 levels are low, hormones can have a negative effect on certain cells or organs. B6 helps regulate several hormones, including androgen (a male hormone), estrogen, progesterone and glucocorticoid (a stress hormone). B6 is essential for normal brain development and function because it helps create neurotransmitters.
What It Does
Several B vitamins work together to help the body convert carbohydrates into glucose, which is then used to produce energy. These vitamins are often referred to as “B complex” and they help metabolize fats and protein. B complex vitamins also support the nervous system, eyes, hair, skin, mouth and liver. Pyridoxine and other B complex vitamins are sometimes called "anti-stress" vitamins because they help the immune system and increase the body's ability to handle stress.
Evidence suggests that B6 may also help control blood sugar in diabetics. In a study of people with diabetes, those who received pyridoxine alpha-ketoglutarate (a form of vitamin B6) for one month experienced significant reductions in fasting blood sugar levels compared to those who did not receive the supplement.
In another study, eighteen patients with diabetes mellitus were treated with steroids and vitamin B6 then studied for periods of 8 months to 28 years. Within that time, researchers found an association of a deficiency of vitamin B6 with diabetes by monitoring the activity of erythrocyte glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (an enzyme that transfers an amino group from an amino acid to another compound). The absence of retinopathy in the vitamin B6-treated diabetic patients over the 8-month to 28-year period appears important. These observations establish an apparent relationship of vitamin B6 deficiency as a molecular cause of diabetic neuropathy.Vitamin B6 is just one of 22 ingredients in the Vita-Betic™ blend multi-vitamin, mineral and herb supplement, formulated to meet the dietary needs of diabetics.
