Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin)
What It Is
Riboflavin is also known as vitamin B2. It’s a water-soluble B complex vitamin that’s involved in important metabolic processes in your body. Riboflavin is required for normal cell function, growth and the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats, ketone bodies and proteins.
What It Does
Riboflavin helps the body’s cells use oxygen efficiently. It also works to maintain good vision, healthy hair, skin, and nails. Insufficient levels of riboflavin are sometimes found in patients being treated for diabetes. It is also seen in people who consume mostly refined foods and fast foods. Deficiency is often found in persons with alcohol problems, the elderly, the poor and in depressed patients.
A study took place in which 24 insulin-dependent diabetic children and 114 normal control children, between the ages of 6 to 16, were checked for riboflavin deficiency. Their erythrocyte glutathione reductase activity was measured and the results were expressed as the activity coefficient (AC). None of the children had received vitamin supplementation. The percentage of diabetic children with riboflavin deficiency was found to be four times greater than non-diabetics. Daily oral riboflavin quickly returned the AC values to normal.Riboflavin is just one of 22 ingredients in the Vita-Betic™ blend multi-vitamin, mineral and herb supplement, formulated to meet the dietary needs of diabetics.
