Vitamin B3 (Niacin)

What It Is

Niacin is a water-soluble B vitamin also called Vitamin B3. It’s found in many foods, including eggs, fish, meat, milk, green vegetables, and cereal grains. Niacin is often combined with other B vitamins to create a “B complex”.

What It Does

Your body needs niacin for cell respiration, energy and to metabolize carbohydrates, fats and proteins. Niacin also aids in proper circulation, healthy skin, nervous system function and normal bile secretion. In patients with diabetes, niacin can help regulate blood sugar.

Niacin treats many abnormalities in cholesterol associated with diabetes. Diabetics have high blood sugar levels as well as a tendency toward high blood levels of the “bad” cholesterol (LDL), triglycerides and the bad clotting factor Lp(a). To make matters worse, diabetics often have low levels of “good” cholesterol, HDL.

In a study highlighted in Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism, 80 percent of the participants who took niacin lowered their LDL cholesterol and raised their HDL2 cholesterol levels. The niacin also lowered blood levels of Lp(a) and the fatty triglycerides that lead to heart attacks. The most important test for measuring diabetic control is HbA1c, and its results improved significantly during treatment with niacin.

Niacin is just one of 22 ingredients in the Vita-Betic™ blend multi-vitamin, mineral and herb supplement, formulated to meet the dietary needs of diabetics. Click here for more information on the Vita-Betic formula, or click here for information how to receive FREE vitamins.
