Type 1 Diabetes
Type 1 diabetes occurs when the body does not produce insulin. Insulin is a hormone that is needed to convert sugar (glucose), starches and other food into energy. Type 1 diabetes is commonly referred to as juvenile diabetes, because it is usually diagnosed in children and young adults, but it can occur later in life if the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas are destroyed.
When food is eaten, sugar enters the bloodstream. Blood sugar (glucose) levels increase but the glucose cannot be used by the body’s cells without the presence of insulin. Prescribed insulin, usually injected, allows the glucose to enter the cells and be used for energy. When glucose enters the cells as it should, blood glucose levels decline.
Diabetics must achieve a delicate balance between food and insulin they put into their bodies. Careful monitoring of blood sugar, control of diet, and timing of medication are needed to keep blood sugar in the “normal” range of 70-125 mg/dL.
The diabetic’s diet challenge is typically to limit sugar in the food they eat in order to not exceed the ability of the prescribed insulin to keep the blood sugar levels in the desired range. Food vendors have produced an abundance of low-sugar and sugar-free foods that help diabetics limit the amount of sugar entering the body.
Enhansulin® Caucasian Blueberry leaf extract has been a useful dietary supplement for people wanting to limit sugar in their diets, because when taken before meals, it reduces the absorption of sugar through the intestines. Click here for the research summary.
